A basic tool used in the risk screening process is a detention Risk Assessment instrument (RAI). Johnson County Probation in collaboration with members of the community including law enforcement, schools and mental health providers created a RAI to be used as a guide to determine the most appropriate placement for a child brought to the detention center.
The RAI is a written checklist of criteria that are applied to rate each juvenile for specific detention-related risks. The overall risk score is then used to guide the on call officer in making the critical decision on whether the child is appropriate for secure detention, a non-secure alternative program or for release home.
