Educational Programs
Children can read about history in a book, or experience it firsthand at the Johnson County Museum!
We invite you to bring your class, home schooling group, scouting troop, family, or daycare group for a visit. Groups are welcome at any time, but if you would like a guided tour of the museum or a visit to the 1830s cabin, please call us several weeks in advance to make arrangements.
We offer programs in the pioneer cabin, museum tours for different age groups, and special craft projects. We have many educational materials such as games, puzzles, crafts, and fun facts to enhance the learning experience. We have outdoor picnic tables and indoor space for groups if you decide to bring your lunch.
The Johnson County Museum has been given the Home Educators Resource Directory seal of approval to recognize our support of the home school community.
Time Travelers’ History Camp
Twenty-five 3rd and 4th graders enjoy a week of fun and discovery at each year’s Time Travelers’ History Camp at the Johnson County Museum. Campers learn about our earliest inhabitants, pioneer settlers, the Civil War years, and daily life through the mid-20th century, through interactive and hands-on gallery tours, craft activities, music, games, and special guest presentations. Space in this program is limited, and registration begins in the spring.

Hands-on Exhibits at the Johnson County Museum
We believe kids learn more when they can interact with exhibits, and use their natural curiosity to play, make-believe, and discover. At the Johnson County Museum kids can have fun playing with pioneer and Victorian dress-up clothes, imagining a journey through the wilderness in our life-sized replica of a Conestoga wagon, doing a museum scavenger hunt, and experiencing toys and games from years gone by.
The handprint symbol you see throughout the museum invites young visitors to “Please Touch the Exhibit!”
