The Johnson County Department of Planning and Zoning

serves the UNINCORPORATED area of the county.  

To determine if the property is in our jurisdiction, please go to the County's online GIS Map. 

Instructions: Once the property is located with the search feature, click on the MAP tab on the top banner of the page. Then, on the map page, turn on "County Zoning" on the Layer List tab on the left side.  The zoning district will display on the map. Any property within a town or city limit will be a shade of light yellow with "CITY-   " displayed as a label.  Watch this video for additional help.

The Johnson County Department of Planning and Zoning serves the unincorporated area of the county by guiding land development and use; enforcing zoning, subdivision, and building codes; administering building permit and inspection services; promoting best practices in stormwater quality and management; and engaging county residents, businesses, institutions and other stakeholders in comprehensive planning initiatives. To that end, our staff serves and supports the citizens of Johnson County, the County Board of Commissioners, Plan Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, Technical Review Committee, and Drainage Board.

Fee Schedule - Include permit fees, land use petitions, and stormwater permit fees 

Road Impact Fee:

Building Permit Applications for all new single-family homes and commercial developments for areas within White River Township will be assessed a Road Impact Fee.  The Road Impact Fee will be collected by the Planning and Zoning Office along with the Building Permit Fee at the issuance of the Building Permit.  All questions should be directed to the Johnson County Highway Department (317-346-4630). BUILDING PERMIT REVIEW TIME:
The average review time on a building permit application is 10 business days. Please plan your project accordingly.

This is subject to change if the department receives more than the expected number of permits in a week.
